Face Oil or Serum — Which Goes First?

Layering order isn't a mystery once you know the one rule that governs every bottle on your shelf.

Few questions fill a beauty editor's inbox quite like this one. The answer is pleasingly simple, and once it clicks you'll never second-guess a routine again.

The one rule: thinnest to thickest

Apply products in order of texture, from the most watery to the most occlusive. Water-based formulas absorb quickly and need clear access to skin; oils and balms sit on top and help slow moisture loss. Reverse that order and the lighter products struggle to get through.

In practice, that looks like this:

  1. Toner or essence
  2. Water-based serum
  3. Eye cream
  4. Moisturizer
  5. Face oil
  6. Sunscreen (morning only — always last)

So where does oil really belong?

Near the end. A few drops pressed over moisturizer act like a soft blanket, adding glow and comfort, especially for dry or dehydrated skin. If your skin is oilier, you may not need a face oil at all — or a single drop mixed into your moisturizer will do.

Serums do the targeted work. Oils keep the good stuff in.

The exceptions

Some serums are oil-based, and some treatments — certain prescription products, for example — come with their own instructions. When in doubt, follow the label or your dermatologist's guidance over any general rule.
