Heatless Waves That Last Until Tuesday
Sleep on it, wake up to soft, swingy waves, and skip the hot tools entirely. Three overnight methods, ranked by effort.
Hot tools are brilliant, but daily heat leaves hair drier and more brittle over time. Overnight methods give you soft, lived-in waves with no damage — and you get to do them half asleep.
The golden rule: damp, not wet
Start with hair that's about 80 per cent dry. Too wet and it won't dry overnight (hello, kinks and frizz); too dry and the shape won't set. Mist with water if you've gone too far.
Method 1: the braid (easiest)
- Apply a light mousse or texturizing spray through damp lengths.
- Plait one or two loose braids — two gives you more even waves.
- Secure with soft scrunchies, not elastic bands.
- Unravel in the morning and break up the sections with your fingers.
Result: relaxed, beachy texture.
Method 2: the twist buns (medium)
Divide hair into two or four sections, twist each one tightly away from your face, then coil it into a small bun. Pin loosely. You'll get bouncier, more defined waves, especially through the ends.
The secret to waves that last is letting the set dry and cool completely before you touch it.
Method 3: the robe-tie curl (most glam)
Place a soft fabric tie or heatless rod over the crown. Wrap sections of damp hair around each side, working back from the face, and secure the ends. Sleep on it and unwind in the morning for glossy, blowout-style waves.
